My host-mom and host-sister took me to visit a couple of places in our region before school starts next week. Our main destination was a town called Roussillon, where they have a national park with ochre hills. We also stopped in Bonnieux, the most beautiful place that looks like a French town out a fairytale:
Roussillon reminded me of New Mexico. One of the most unexpected things about the region here is that there are a lot of desert-like qualities. The sand in the national park was really bright, which is what makes it well-known. It was nice to see a ton of tourists after being out in the countryside, and the small amount of English I was able to speak when I took a picture for some American tourists felt great. My host-sister got a chocolate crêpe and I got lavender ice cream, and we walked around the town. Jeanne would go hide somewhere while my host-mom and I looked at stores. I got a Roussillon postcard to send back home.
In the evening my we went to my host-aunt's house in Puget. She lives with David, and they have two kids: Sasha and Anna. In France it's normal for couples to live together and have kids, without ever getting married, like Marjorie and David. David had gone to Japan last year for a conference, and we talked about Japan. Even though I'm an American exchange student, people seem to be more interested that I'm half Japanese. At the dinner there were also a couple friends of the family. I got full after eating bread and tapenade (a common French appetizer made from olives which I love) before we even started the main meal. David made pizza for us, and it's definitely been one of the best things I've had to eat here so far. Each pizza he made was different, but my favorite was the one with goat cheese and figs, which is a unexpectedly great combination.
